Danny Lemmons
Lemmons Bucking Bulls
By Marcia Bennett
Danny Lemmons of Lemmons Bucking Bulls resides in Copan, Oklahoma. He has been in the bucking bull business for about
30 years now. He became a member of the Midwest Breeder’s Alliance when it formed last year. He is a Director, as well as a
Share Holder of the Alliance.
Lemmons has a small herd. His main herd sire is L1 Splat Kat, a son of Skat Kat. Like his sire, Splat Kat has become known as
a PBR Finals Bull, as well as the Mo Betta Futurity Champion. He also has 2 Derby wins and a Classic win. Dustin Elliott rode
Splat Kat for 88 points during the 1st round at the 2008 Omaha, NE PBR BFTS event. Zack Brown rode Splat Kat for 88.25 points
during the 1st round at the 2008 Des Moines, IA PBR BFTS event. Just to mention a couple of his fantastic rides. Lemmons is
pretty proud of his Herd Sire. Splat Kat is also sire to Kat Blue who was in the ABBI standing in 2006.
I asked Lemmons what are the benefits of becoming a member of the Midwest Breeder’s Alliance. He said “ gives you
opportunities to participate in sales the Alliance sponsors at a lower price to consign your animals than other traditional sales,
participate in futurities and derbies the Alliance sponsors, again entering your animal at lower entry fees than other events.” He
went on to say, “the alliance is still young, as it grows, we hope to offer more benefits to our members.”
The Midwest Breeder’s Alliance is currently in the process of a membership drive, opening up the membership to anyone who
would like to join. They have scheduled 3 upcoming Futurity and Derby events , one in October, November, and December. They
are hope to increase their membership so more breeders in the industry may benefit from what the Alliance offers. To find out

Jerry Copp, Lightning C Cattle
By Marcia Bennett
Jerry Copp of Lightning C Cattle was recently elected the new Chairman of the Midwest Breeders Alliance. He has been an
original member since the Alliance was formed a year ago. If you follow the futurities, you have heard his name mention on
occasions because he has produced some great futurity bulls. So let’s get to know the new Chairman a bit better and find out
about his program.
Copp has been around rodeo all of his life. He use to buy and sale bulls. Then in 1998 he decided he wanted to start a breeding
program. Copp and his son in law, Britt Bockius, also a Champion Team Roper, formed their partnership and began their
program. Lightning C Cattle, located in Claremore, OK. They started with 10 heifers that were cross bred Long Horns. Copp was
able to obtain semen from David Bailey’s Gunslinger and Playboy Skoal and AI’ed the heifers. When the heifers calved, all had
bull calves accept one.
The only heifer calf born out of his first calf crop , he AI’ed his Gunglinger daughter to Spittin Image, a son of the PBR bull,
Wolfman. She produced a bull calf, Spittin Guns who went on to win the 2006 ABBI World Finals in Vegas, placed 3rd in the
American Heritage Futurity and won the NBBA Finals.
This year they’ve had much success in the futurities. The ABBI standing on the date we did this interview, their bull, 632 Copp Hou
is in 1st place. At the 2008 American Heritage, #65 Achey-Hu placed 2nd, earning $54,187.50! #61 Wine-Hu placed 5th, earning
$19,868.75 and #632 Copp Hou placed 6th earning $18,062.50.
Their herd consists of just over 45 cows. This year they had 42 calves hit the ground. They have bloodlines that include Houdini,
Night Life, Pole Cat , Spittin Image, Copperhead Stinger and a White Sports Coat Son. They also have 18-19 recip cows with
embryos in them from Playboy, Warzone, 20 Grand and Pole Cat.
We asked Copp when do they buck their bull calves for the first time, he said “ we usually buck them after they are weaned. We
look for the athletic abilities in them, if they show potential we keep them and buck them again a few months later. We also buck
our heifers one time to see their abilities.” Copp shared that with these young bulls you can ruin a good bucker if you buck them to
often. They are still developing and will have some soreness from bucking them just one time.
We also discussed with Copp their nutrition program for their bulls. Copp admitted when they first started their program, they
used the usual traditional feed for the bulls. One day, his wife brought it to his attention when they were returning home from an
event, that when they had horses, for their daughter, who competed in barrel racing, they fed them feed to help them with their
muscle tone, bones and performance. So why not do the same for these young bulls, who you are expecting performance from.
So Copp checked around, talked with Jim McClain of Two Bulls Performance Feed and started adding it to his bulls diet. He seen
a remarkable change in their appearance, body conditioning, and their performance. Copp also explained that it is also how he
feeds them. He has pens built for feeding, he feeds 2- 3 bulls per pen, they are about the same age in each pen. He contributes
that method of feeding beneficial, the bulls are able to get the amount of feed they need, they aren’t bullied by older bulls during
feeding.
Copp said he couldn’t do all this by himself. He has a young man, Cody May, that has been with him for 10 years now. May is like
his right hand. He prefers working with the bulls, but helps with all aspects of the operation.
In conclusion, Copp said “ your not going to get into this and have over night success, it takes years before you see if your
program produces buckers” Copp also shared with us that he has talked with breeders like Sammy Andrews, Monty Samford and
the Pages, to learn about this business. He listens to them, they have been around it longer and know from experience.
